Scholarship Programs

The ASFPM Foundation supports students at every stage—from K–12 learning through undergraduate and graduate study—through scholarships and grants that build the next generation of flood risk management professionals.

Future Leaders Scholarship Program

The ASFPM Foundation Future Leaders Scholarship offers up to $20,000 per year for the last two years in a four or five year undergraduate program and is for students studying fields related to floodplain and flood risk management. The scholarship supports undergraduate studies only and is aimed at students committed to a career that reduces the risk and impacts of floods on people and communities. Each year the Foundation selects one new Future Leaders Scholar. The application deadline is February 1st of each year.

Student Paper Competition

The competition invites undergraduate and graduate students to explore innovative solutions to floodplain management challenges by presenting their papers at the ASFPM Conference. Teams consisting of one or more students are encouraged to submit abstracts on subjects relating to floodplain or stormwater management. Up to $1,500 is provided for the cost for one presenter from each team to travel to the Conference to present, and conference attendance is also provided, as well as monetary prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

K-12 Grants

The ASFPM Foundation is committed to fostering the next generation of flood risk management thought leaders by providing scholarship grants to K–12 educational programs. These grants support initiatives that empower an important segment of students to understand and address natural hazards in their communities through hands-on learning and civic engagement.
