Overview
The ASFPM Foundation supports initiatives that align with the Foundation’s mission of fostering flood risk reduction and taking action to make communities more resilient in the face of increasingly severe weather events. We advance this mission via a rigorous process of soliciting project ideas from a broad array of floodplain management and flood risk professionals and evaluating their project proposals to ensure they align with the Foundation’s goals and objectives. Important evaluation criteria include potential positive impacts to reduce flood risk and overall project feasibility.
The Foundation allocates funding for viable projects that are selected as a result of this process and monitors their progress. We provide additional technical and administrative support throughout the life of the project to further ensure a successful outcome. By promoting these outcomes and the overall achievements that result from project planning and implementation, the Foundation raises awareness and encourages innovation and collaboration to advance flood risk reduction and resilience.
Celebrating 20 Years of No Adverse Impact –
A Cornerstone Foundation Project
2026 is a banner year in marking important milestone achievements that have positively impacted the Floodplain and Flood Risk Management Community. Not only are we honoring the 50th anniversary of ASFPM and the 30th anniversary of the ASFPM Foundation, 2026 is the 20th anniversary of No Adverse Impact or NAI, a cornerstone project that received funding and support by the Foundation. Simply put, NAI means that actions of any community or property owner, public or private, should not adversely impact the property and rights of others. It extends beyond the floodplain to include managing development in the watersheds where floodwaters originate. NAI does not prohibit development; but it works to reduce any adverse impact caused by a project in a floodplain or watershed or to mitigate it.
ASFPM and the ASFPM Foundation recognized the importance of NAI early on, which has evolved over these past 20 years into a robust program aimed at providing practical tools and techniques to communities wishing to become more resilient through responsible mitigation and floodplain management practices.
