Mark your Calendars: December 3, 2024 is Giving Tuesday!
The ASFPM Foundation continues to change lives and provide opportunities to develop young men and women into leaders who will strengthen our profession and guide the future of flood risk management. In 2018, the ASFPM Foundation awarded its first Future Leaders Scholarship (FLS), which was a direct result of the generosity of our donors.
Since then, FLS scholarships were awarded in 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024 through a rigorous application and selection process. Our 2022 FLS recipient, Esme Nelson, is a second-year student at Gonzaga University in Washington State where she is a civil engineering student. Our 2023 FLS scholar is Kacie Malone who is studying environmental science at the University of Minnesota. The recent 2024 recipient is Eryn Bloom who is attending St. Cloud State University. She is working towards her Double Major in Hydrology and Earth Sciences with a concentration in Environmental Geology. The FLS is up to $20,000 per year for two years for undergraduate studies. The next FLS will be awarded in 2025. Please know that the Foundation is able to offer the FLS to a new student every year due to everyone's support of the ASFPM Foundation – this is exciting news! Thank you!
The ASFPM Foundation wants to help other undergraduate students achieve their dreams of becoming a flood risk management professional through our participation in Giving Tuesday. Again this year, all donations we receive on Giving Tuesday will be directed to the Future Leaders Scholarship fund, with a goal of $40,000. We ask that you mark your calendars and consider making a donation so that we not only meet, but exceed our goal.
Here are some additional Giving Tuesday "fun facts”…
- Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea that encourages people to do good; it’s an opportunity for people around the world to use their individual power of generosity to remain connected to, and supportive of their communities, however they choose to define it.
- Giving Tuesday is held every year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving; this year it’s December 3, 2024.
- The use of social media helps to "force multiply” the message: Nonprofits use social media to tell their stories and inspire donors to give; donors use their social media to share why they give and encourage their friends, families, and colleagues to follow suit.
- Over 70 percent of people who choose to donate on Giving Tuesday typically give $10 to $20 to their nonprofit of choice, and only give on Giving Tuesday.
